¿When is iSHM used?
Monitoring of known failures. If a non-critical failure is detected during a physical review, its effect on the geometry of the bridge can be monitored so that informed decisions about necessary repairs can be made.
Bridges at the end of their useful life. Generally, the calculations of the useful life of a structure are quite conservative at the design stage, so there are structures that can be considered out of service early generation adverse consequences in economic and environmental terms. With a monitoring system, the condition of a bridge can be correctly evaluated, and corrective measures can be taken in order to make decisions to extend its useful life.
Review of bridges in good condition. Installing a monitoring structural health system is investing in the future of the bridge. By looking closely at its geometry, component failures, and geological effects, early corrections can be made to scheduled maintenance before any significant damage occurs.
The iSHM System
The technical challenge for bridge structural health monitoring is to measure small changes over long periods. All this in adverse environmental conditions and with minimal infrastructure. PSP systems have been developed through a collaboration between experienced electrical and structural engineers which are capable of measuring relevant data accurately and stably. The system has three key components: A set of sensors adapted to the structure, a registration system that stores the data provided by the sensors, and a server that is capable of analyzing the data and presenting it in a Web interface.
